With your Apple Color Printer, you can print color, grayscale, and black & white documents. When you print in color, you can use ColorSync™ to make the colors in your printed document closely match what you see on your computer screen. If you scan color documents with a scanner (such as the Apple Color OneScanner), using ColorSync™ the colors in your printed documents will closely match those in the original image.
You can share your printer with other users on an AppleTalk network without adding any extra hardware or software.
For more information about these and other features of your Apple Color Printer, see your Apple Color Printer User's Guide.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Your Apple Color Printer works with color compatible Macintosh computers that have:
• at least 4 MB of memory
• system software version 7.0 or later
• a hard disk drive with sufficient available space (a message on your screen will tell you if you don’t have enough space when you start installing your printer software)
LOW MEMORY TROUBLESHOOTING
When you are running large programs (or many programs), you may find that some documents do not print or print incorrectly (the edges of letters may look jagged instead of smooth). You may also see “out of memory” messages on your screen. These symptoms mean that your Macintosh is low on memory. To make more memory available, try these suggestions:
• Open only one application at a time.
• Turn off the RAM cache, or set it as low as possible. (To adjust the RAM cache, use the Memory control panel.)
• Try printing with background printing turned off. (To turn off background printing, use the Chooser.)
• "Init" files (such as extensions, and Control Panels) in the system folder usually use up some of your Macintosh's RAM. Remove "init" files to free up some memory.
• Add more memory. See the information about service and support that came with your computer to find out who to contact about adding RAM to your Macintosh.
PRINTING TIPS
Follow these suggestions to get the best results with your Apple Color Printer:
• If you have trouble printing to your Apple Color Printer after your initial installation, you may have more than one SCSI device sharing the same ID number. For more information on SCSI IDs, see the Apple Color Printer User’s Guide.
• If you have an Apple 8•24GC card installed, turn acceleration off before printing to your Apple Color Printer. (To turn off acceleration, use the 8•24GC control panel.)
• Do not switch background printing off while there are documents waiting to print. (Documents waiting to print are listed in the PrintMonitor window.)
• Close the Chooser after making any printer set-up changes.
COLOR PRINTING TIPS
• For best color matching results, you need to set your system's color profile. Open the ColorSync Control Panel and select the type of monitor attached to your system. If your monitor type has 2 selections (one Page-White, the other Standard), follow these steps to determine how your monitor is set, and to set the proper system color profile:
1. Open the Monitors control panel.
2. Hold down the Option key while you click on the word Option.
3. Check the "Use Special Gamma" box.
In the dialog box that appears, you see the setting you have selected for your monitor.
4. Use the ColorSync Control Panel to select the type of monitor attached to your system.
• If you are printing several documents with 'Customized Color Matching' that use different printer ColorSync profiles, then turn background printing off.
• If you get error messages when changing color matching settings, delete the file “Apple Color Printer Profiles,” then restart your Macintosh. The file “Apple Color Printer Profiles” is in the folder called Printing Prefs, inside the Preferences folder within your System Folder.
Note: There is a limit on the range of colors that most printers can print. The color-matching software within the Apple Color Printer software will try to get the closest color match that the printer can produce.
USING THE APPLE COLOR PRINTER WITH APPLICATION PROGRAMS
Some application programs do not yet take advantage of the Apple Color Printer's new features. If you experience problems with your application programs, contact the publishers of the programs. Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from your application programs:
4th Dimension version 2.2.3 (Acius)
Some documents print best at 100% scaling and in portrait (tall) orientation.
Adobe Illustrator 3.2
For best results, use Background printing and print at 100% scaling.
Adobe Illustrator documents placed into other applications (for example, PageMaker) may print with gray outlines.
Images do not print in color. To print Illustrator files in color you can open them with Adobe Photoshop and then print.
Adobe Photoshop 2.01
For best results, do NOT click the "Correct for Printing Colors" box in the Print dialog.
Canvas 3.0 (Deneba)
For best results, upgrade to version 3.0.4 or later. If you use Canvas 3.0.4 to create an image that has color patterns, print the image from Canvas rather than from another application.
ColorStudio 1.5 (Fractal Design version only)
Images print at one fifth the correct size.
DeltaGraph Pro 2.0 (DeltaPoint)
Always click the QuickDraw button in the Print dialog.
Freehand 3.0 (Aldus)
For best results, print at 100% scaling.
Intellidraw 1.0 (Aldus)
Some very complex objects (symmetrigons) may not print correctly. Try reducing the size of the object to correct the problem.

The Collate option in the Print dialog box does not work.
Mathematica 2.1 (Wolfram Research, Inc.)
For best results printing color graphics print using the Bitmap selection and turn background printing on.

To print using color, set two options in the Print dialog box: choose "Color/grayscale" from the Image pop-up menu, and turn on "Print Using Color."
Microsoft PowerPoint 2.01f
Handouts and Notes from landscape (wide) documents may not print correctly. For best results upgrade to PowerPoint 3.0.
Microsoft Works 2.0e
For best results, upgrade to version 3.0 or later. If you use version 2.0e, turn off Background Printing in the Chooser.
MORE 3.1 (Symantec Corporation)
For best results print at 100% or less.
Personal Press 2.0 (Aldus)
For best results turn Background printing on. In some cases you may be able to correct printing problems by giving the application more memory (Select the application icon, Get Info from the File menu, type new size in the Current Size field).
If Personal Press "unexpectedly quits" follow these steps:
1. Open the document.
2. Select a different printer driver in the Chooser (such as the LaserWriter).
3. Close the Chooser.
4. Select Page Setup.
5. Save the document.
6. Re-select your Apple Color Printer in the Chooser.

If you get a system error 25, try the suggestions listed in “Low Memory Troubleshooting,” above.
WordPerfect 2.1
For best results when printing objects from the drawing layer, turn on Background Printing.
